About the route

A classic ridge hike across Pen y Fan with sweeping views.

Route Description

This circular ridge walk takes in the best-known peaks of the Brecon Beacons. Starting from the main car park, the path climbs steadily through open moorland before reaching the dramatic summits of Corn Du and Pen y Fan. The return leg follows a lower trail, offering a gentler descent and wide valley views. Expect a mix of stone steps, gravel tracks, and uneven ground with some steep sections.

Safety Notes

Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Carry warm layers, waterproof clothing, and enough food and water for the full walk. The ridge can be exposed in strong winds, and paths may be slippery after rain. Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential. Always let someone know your route and expected return time.

Access

The trail begins at Pont ar Daf car park on the A470. The path is well-marked but can be busy at peak times. Dogs are welcome but should be kept under close control, especially around livestock. Please stick to marked paths to protect the fragile upland environment.

Transport

Regular buses serve the A470 corridor, with stops near Storey Arms Outdoor Centre, a short walk from the trailhead. The nearest train stations are Merthyr Tydfil and Abergavenny; onward travel requires local bus or taxi. Parking at Pont ar Daf is pay-and-display, with toilets available.

Seasonal Tips

Summer offers long daylight hours and colourful wildflowers, but the route can be crowded. In autumn, expect quieter trails and vivid foliage. Winter conditions can be severe with snow, ice, and reduced visibility — suitable only for experienced walkers with appropriate kit. Spring often brings fast-changing weather; pack layers.
